Finance Committee
The Finance Committee
as of August 2006
The Finance Committee is one of the many committees of Session that keeps the church running. There are many volunteers that through their support ensure that the many different aspects of the Finance Committee are met. The Finance Elder is responsible to ensure that these processes are completed and are timely.
There are four teams of two volunteers that make up the Teller’s group. These volunteers count and deposit the offerings from the Sunday services. Joyce Hathaway oversees the Teller’s and does the scheduling. They are: Bob Connett and Dick McClure, Charlotte Tucker and Barbara Powell, Helen Christenson and Marilyn Becker, Kitty Tatro and Jarvis Arellano. They all do a great job each week. Additionally, Joyce has served admirably as Clerk of the Session for a number of years.
The Pledge Secretary is Debbi Kanner who records all monies and gives credit to the proper individual. Debbi sends out semi-annual statements to those that pledge to the Operating or Building Funds and annually sends statements to all givers. Presently the income to date is $21,000.00 over the projected giving of $546,000 but this will slack off during the summer vacation months. The Building Fund loan balance is down to $104,000 and will be paid off within the next two years.
After serving as Finance Elder, Debbi took over as Pledge Secretary and does an excellent job. Since she has served for over five years, we are looking for someone new to volunteer as her back-up and eventually to take over.
Another volunteer position is the Church Treasurer, Bill Baker, who makes sure that all Church accounting reports are done on a timely basis and that all accounts are balanced, while conforming to proper accounting practices. This includes reconciling all bank accounts and keeping all committee leaders informed of their activities each month. Presently the budget is looking good. Our spending is under budget by approximately $21,000. However sometimes some budgets are not spent until the end of the year, so this could change. Bill does an excellent job and also provides technical assistance for sound once a month on Sundays. Also volunteering on this Committee is Jim Tracy, past Church Treasurer, who offers excellent advice and assistance. Our newest committee member is M.J.Hall.
The Finance Elder is responsible for the preparation of our Annual Budget, after input from all the committee leaders, for approval by the Session, which is then presented to the congregation. The Finance Elder is responsible to see that all monies not needed for daily operations are invested in non-risky investments such as Certificates of Deposit and money market accounts. In the absence of the Office Manager, the Finance Elder issues checks and sends in the payroll. This position (Finance Elder) is the critical link with all of these volunteers to be sure that any issues are promptly addressed. Teamwork from all of these volunteers is needed to keep all of these pieces running smoothly, resulting in a financially secure church.
