Dear Faith Family,
This Christmas season Esther and I would like to extend an invitation to you and your family to join us for a Christmas Open House at our home on Sunday afternoon, December 11th. If you are able, please join us anytime between 2:00 and 5:30 that day. We live at 356 Bay River Way, just a short distance from the church. (see map below).
There is no need to bring anything, just come and enjoy some holiday treats and time with other wonderful people from our church community. In part, this is one way our family can express our gratitude to all of you for the hospitality and warmth you have extended to us this past year. How grateful we all are that God has called us to serve and enjoy this congregation. How grateful we are for another Christmas in Sacramento.

Praying the Scriptures in Advent
Following dinner and advent worship - each Wednesday at 7:30 pm, Pastor Jim Zazzera will lead us in a practice known as "lectio divina." Simply put, we will be sharing in a corporate exercise of reading the scriptures in a prayerful way. While we will certainly read passages for intellectual undertanding, we will spend much of our time prayerfully asking God what God is saying to us from each text. We will use traditional Advent & Christmas passages from each Gospel.
Stewardship Campaign Update:
Sunday, November 13 was Commitment Sunday when the congregation was asked to turn in their pledge cards for the 2006 operating budget. The Stewardship Committee is pleased to report that on the days leading up to, during, and the days shortly after Commitment Sunday, we received 132 pledge cards totaling $387,578.00! These are numbers exciting especially when compared to the 2005 results. For the current year, we have 172 pledging units committing a total of $428,039.00.
So, with the fact there are a number of cards yet to be returned to the church it would appear we are heading to a healthy financial position for 2006 since the average pledged amount is considerably higher. Great news!
It is still early, but if you have not turned in your card, we would be most appreciative of your doing so. You can drop it in th offering plate or mail to the church office.

Another way to Commit
On November 20 many people will be making a commitment to Faith church and its many ministries. Please remember the children of Faith as you are praying for guidance on your commitments. The children need people who are willing to be leaders in Faith, who will commit to teaching the next generation their beliefs and passions. Please prayerfully consider working in the Sunday School classrooms. Our next semester will begin in January. River City Chorale at Faith
The River City Chorale, with orchestra and the Bel Tempo Handbells, will present their 29th annual holiday concert "What Sweeter Music" at Faith Presbyterian Church, 625 Florin Road, on Friday, December 2 at 7:30pm.
Featured is "The Magnificat" by J.C. Bach, and selected, popular Christmas season music by Rutter, Harlan, Morrissey and Bass.

We will again be gathering grocery sacks full of non-perishable food items to take to the SSIP Food Closet on the first Sunday of the month, December 4.

The Christmas Joy Offering is one of four special offerings taken by the Presbyterian Church worldwide. Funds raised are split between the Board of Pensions and Presbyterian related racial-ethnic education programs. This offering will be taken on Sunday, December 18.

A special offering will be taken at both Christmas Eve services, and will be split between Family Promise and SSIP. As has become a Faith tradition, we invite you to bring peanut butter on Christmas Eve to be passed on to the SSIP Food Closet.
Giving Tree
Clean and Sober – Once again we are asking you to help them provide homeless and disadvantaged men and women an opportunity to achieve sobriety. Clean and Sober has two recovery communities as well as two apartment units reaching out to over 140 people in transition. Program members need hygiene supplies, underwear, and toilet paper. Please bring what you can on Sunday, November 27.

My Sister’s House –reaching out to Asian and Pacific women and children who are victims of domestic violence, My Sister’s House requests donations of hygiene supplies, underwear and toilet paper. Please place your gifts under the tree on Sunday, December 4.

Wind Center for Youth focuses on providing homeless and street youth with help to move from crisis to healthy functioning. Wind Center asks for donations of gift cards to fast food restaurants and department stores like Target and Best Buy to use on outings or as incentives. You can bring your gift on Sunday, December 11.

La Familia Counseling Center seeks to improve the quality of life for at-risk youth and families of diverse backgrounds. La Familia will be providing us names and ages of children and youth who need new clothing. Look for the information on Sunday, December 11 and bring your gift the following Sunday, December 18.

HERE COME THE KINGS
Kings’ tickets are now available for three games: Wednesday, November 23 vs. the New Jersey Nets; Sunday, January 8 vs. the Indiana Pacers; and Friday, March 10 vs. the Memphis Grizzlies. Tickets are $25.50 each, and they are available on a first-come, first-paid basis. You must pay for the tickets now since the Kings require payment up front. BARBARA DRAMER
Five years ago Barbara Dramer and her then 2nd grade daughter, Nina, rented out their Land Park house and took off to live in an apartment in Paris for a year.
“Nina was immersed in the French language, attending a local school just around the corner from our apartment. I learned to speak French fairly well,” explained Barbara,” but Nina learned so much quicker!”
Barbara said that one of her best experiences living in Paris was attending the American Church (services were similar to Presbyterian service) located just ½ mile from the Eiffel Tower.
“It was a really big church with an international community. Anyone interested in speaking English would attend. And they had the most fabulous Sunday School program!” She said. In fact, whenever the two travel back to Paris they always make sure that they can attend services at the American Church.
Barbara has been coming to Faith for several years. A California native who spent her high school years in Cincinnati, Barbara is a divorced mom who worked in the dentistry field before quitting to stay home full time with Nina 13 years ago. Today she’s busy remodeling her Land Park home-and doing most of the work herself! Welcome to our Faith family, Barbara!
CATHY SHEAHAN HEALOW
Cathy was raised in Rosalia, WA (near Spokane). She graduated from Washington State University with a B.S. in Education. She enjoyed working as a High School counselor for 6 years in Woodland, WA, and her dependance on God grew through working with teenagers and listening to their concerns.
She married USCG helicopter pilot, Steve Healow in 1984, moved to Kodiak Island Alaska where she worked with learning disabled children for two years. Then moved to Bozeman Montana for Steve to take graduate classes & worked as a counselor at MSU for three years.
Son Danny was born in 1991, and they moved to Sacramento in 1993 and began here at Faith. They made another move to Sparks NV, and then Joey came along in 1996. They moved back to Sacramento in 1997 and returned to Faith.
Cathy’s hobbies include bicycling, walking, swimming, and writing. The whole Healow family have been very involved here at Faith with Sunday School, VBS, and various other youth activities. Welcome to Faith Cathy!
JUDY HEY and KEVIN ROBERSON
Judy Hey and Kevin Roberson are two of our newest additions to the Faith family. Although Faith has always been “on the radar” for them, they attended Fremont Presbyterian Church because it was closer to their home in Elk Grove. Kevin heard about the youth programs here at Faith through a schoolmate at Elk Grove High, and began attending with his friend Nathan at the end of last year. As a ninth grader, he is a part of a large class entering into CREW this year. He loved the warm and welcoming environment as well as the fun he had at youth group, and so decided to become a full member of Faith. Kevin was confirmed at Fremont, so both he and his mother are joining by letter of transfer.
Judy works as an interpreter (sign language) for the Elk Grove School District. She works primarily with the newer middle schools and high schools in EGUSD. When Kevin told her he wanted to transfer to Faith, she wanted to transfer as well. Her journey to Faith has been a testament to the importance of family; she knew how important it was for Kevin to be involved in a youth group at a church that he loved attending. In addition to interpreting, Judy’s passion is prayer. She is excited about getting involved in the Prayer Ministry at Faith, and is already introducing other members to new activities! If you are interested in Prayer Ministry, say hello to Judy and ask about her ideas. Welcome Judy and Kevin to the Faith Family!
Faith Goes to “Evening in December”
Many of you enjoyed the First Covenant Church’s An Evening in December last year at the Memorial Auditorium, and this year’s program promises to be just as exciting. Performances will take place November 30 through December 4 with both a matinee and an evening performance on December 3 and 4. I am planning a Faith Church group on Saturday evening, December 3, but I can get tickets for any performance for you. Tickets are $8. This is a great family activity, and I encourage you to take your children. I can get tickets before they go on sale to the general public if I purchase them before October 18. A Helping Hand Especially For Those Who Need It Most
Are you a Senior Citizen or are disabled and have a light bulb burned out that you can’t climb up to change? A lock or latch that doesn’t work properly? A faucet that needs to be replaced or just to stop dripping? A toilet that runs, and runs, and runs… You get the picture. Some of the most annoying mechanical systems in the world reside in our homes and many of us can’t fix or replace them. Now you can have some help! We are starting a new help ministry at Faith Presbyterian that will come to your home in the Greenhaven / Pocket area to help with these little problems for the cost of materials. Many problems can be solved with no materials, but in those that require a new switch or valve or other items, all you pay for is the cost of the materials, the labor is free. If there is something large we can’t tackle, we’ll let you know you’ll have to go to a professional for that service.

Notes from the November 14 Session Meeting
Four new members were introduced at this meeting --- Barbara Dramer, Kevin Roberson, Judy Hey and Cathy Healow.
Cindy Canaday, Chair of the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee, presented the Church Information Form that the Committee had compiled. Session approved it and complemented them on a superb job.
SSIP sent a letter of thank you for hosting the Watoto concert and said we had donations in the amount of $1,878.00.
Fred Noteware and Alice Parente will be serving as commissioners to Presbytery on December 6th in Vacaville. Claire Pisor is a candidate for Commissioner to General Assembly in June 2006.
Deacons are still working on some means of transporting folks to church who do not have a way to get to church.
Pastor Zazzera will contact persons to meet with session relative to the Spiritual Director program.
Results from Commitment Sunday were excellent. Approximately 125 pledges were turned in for a total of $358,428.00
Finance plans to reduce the balance of the loan on the church by a substantial amount which will reduce the amount of interest being paid but still maintain a reserve.
Next session meeting will be December 12 with Pastors Chapman and Zazzera serving as chefs for a dinner.

It’s Basketball Season!
The Kings are back in action! They are off to a pretty slow start this season, but I have faith that they will be able to turn things around. As the basketball season gets underway the youth groups here at the church are preparing for another season of Arco games. For the last few years the parents of youth, and many other volunteers, have worked at Arco Arena to raise funds to support our youth programs. We make over $10,000 a year for Crew and Munchies, and the youth programs would not be the same without these funds.
Not only is this a great way to raise funds for the youth groups, but it is a really exciting experience! You get to hang out with other parents and interesting people from the church. It is a great way to get to know other people, and we have tons of fun at the games. Parents are encouraged to work the games and any adult is more than welcome to help out too. We need all the helpers we can get!
We are signed up to work ten games this season and I can’t wait for them to start. We need at least 35 adults at each game and we are really low in signups this year. We need your help! We need to be at the arena two hours before the games. The dress code is a white button-up shirt, black pants, and black close-toed shoes. I have included the schedule for the games this year. November 18th ARCO Results
Dear ACROfaithfuls,
We are off to a great start and the Kings are improving, having beat the Bucks last night. Thanks to the 35 volunteers that staffed the North concession stand for Faith. We earned a $1166.53 from Maloof Sports and Entertainment. Add $33.47 in tips from our generous Kings fans customers and we made $1200 for the night. GREAT GOING!!!
Thanks to Betty Keller for handling the inventory control, Jennie Fong and Steve Canaday for managing our money (about $19,000 in cash) and Gwen Markuson and Jon Cash for doing a great job with the condiments and Brien Bell, our really cool ice-guy. Special thanks to: Jennie Fong, Carol Keller, Craig Rienhold, Debbie Granco, and Lin Cun, who don't regularly attend Faith, but donated their time and talents to support our Youth Ministry. Thanks to Cindy Canaday for starting the carpools from the Church and training and managing the runners.
